One Country's Misfortune is Another's Political Mileage

There are some quarters in Singapore that would be looking at the unfortunate religious tension in Malaysia as an 'opportunity' instead of the sad social dilemma that it is. Rest assured that the references will be made to highlight how 'good' things are here by comparison.

Now, if only such comparisons can extend to issues like welfare...

Dear Ganga,

Now, without any intention to gloat at the misfortunes of our Malaysian cousins, wouldn't you say that things are at least better here in Singapore?

As a foreigner who has seen far, far worse in both religious strife and its milking for political gain, I think that the way the whole affair was spun here in Singapore was, to put the mildest possible words on it, reprehensible, disingenuous, racist and profoundly hurtful to all people of any faith. In other words, largely what I have come to expect after several years observing ehat passes for politics here. Singapore deserves better, and the longer the delay in installing a just government, the farther behind Singaporw will fall in the world and the greater the already fearsome gulf between those who benefit from the policy they set, and the vast majority who have been taught from birth that they have no choice but to endure it.

All that is missing is a member of the elite saying on CNA "Let them eat cake."
